Cindy Zerr, 30, of Texas says she thinks about her looks, "Everyday.
Especially when you see a bumper sticker that says NO FAT CHICKS. Comments
like that are the reason so many of us have eating disorders."
What impact do you think the media has had
on how women perceive their physical self?
A large impact. How often do you hear of the media doing a piece
on an overweight person or an unattractive person? Not very often, unless
they are a super star.
What moment in your life did you feel the
most beautiful?
When I married my husband. He is the best and always say that I
am pretty.
What moment did you feel the
ugliest?
When my skinnier and prettier best friend got the guy and I didn't
because I was overweight
Do you insides match your outsides? If so,
how? If not, how?
No. I am overweight, so I don't feel pretty or nice, and on the
inside, I feel like a nice person and that is a difference
How have your looks impacted your life, both
professionally and in relationships?
They really haven't relationship wise. I have the man I love and
he thinks I'm beautiful no matter what. Professionally, they always pick
the prettiest and thinnest for the job regardless of the ability.
Do you put a lot of money and time into your
appearance?
No. Why should I? As long as I am overweight, no one will think
twice about me or others like me
How often do you think about your looks, weight
and body type?
Everyday. Especially when you see a bumper sticker that says NO
FAT CHICKS. Comments like that are the reason so many of us have eating
disorders
Do you think men put pressure on women to
look a certain way - or do we women put this pressure on
ourselves?
Yes. But we put pressure on ourselves too. Do you ever see a man
whistling at a n overweight woman?
Are your looks a big issue in your
life?
Not so much to me as to others
Do you focus on fashion? Or is this not an
issue in your life?
no. I have my own style and that is what I go with and don't worry
about it
What would you like to see changed in our
society when it comes to women and beauty?
The way the media always shows and endorses thin. There are millions
of overweight people in the world today and would like to see more of them
in magazines and on TV. If so, this world would be a lot better
off.
Do you still feel women are judged by their
appearance more than anything else? Or are things
changing?
Of course we are still judged by our appearance. It only seems to
get worse with time.
What is your daily appearance regimen? Do
you do certain things to maintain a certain look?
I take care of my skin and my hair. I don't wear a lot of makeup.
And rely on good old fashion remedies for ailments. The way God intended.
I don't go to the beauty shops. I am who I am. If that offends people, I'm
sorry. This is the way God made me, so everyone has to live with
it.
What advice do you have for women who feel
perpetually dissatisfied with their appearance?
Do something about it. Stop relying on everybody else. Trial and
error is the only way to find out where you fit in. And do your own thing,
no matter how much people may like it. Try to be yourself and love yourself
for who you are not who society wants you to be. |
