Christa Weil, our expert wardrobe columnist and the author of
"Secondhand
Chic: The Secrets to Finding Fantastic Bargains at Thrift Shops, Consignment
Shops, Vintage Shops and More" has shares her tips on how to bargain
your way to lower prices.
Dear Christa:
I frequent thrift stores in my neighborhood.
They are great. My question is--how do I bargain for lower prices with the
owner? I see people come in and 'haggle' and make off with great deals. Can
you teach me a little about this? Thank you.
Christa's Answer: Some people seem to have a natural talent for
getting prices bargained down, while the rest of us have a hard time working
up the nerve.
If you're in this category, the best tactic is to have
a great excuse to ask for a discount--one that really makes you feel confident
about your request.
Examples:
* The piece will require extra work/expense on your part, for example
it has a missing button, a torn lining, a small stain (don't buy anything
with a big stain!!).
* You are buying a lot of pieces at once. "I'd love to take all
of these, but only have $xx to spend." If you are a few dollars short, many
stores will give you a break.
* You are a good, regular customer, and happily pay full price most
of the time.
Remember, many thrifts are in business to make money for charity,
so have a strict policy against giving discounts. Get a feel for the rules
in different places, and good luck!!
