Joe Vitale, our expert marketing and publicity columnist, and the
author of
"Cyberwriting:
How to Promote Your Product or Service Online (Without Being Flamed) has
advice for a new business owner who isn't quite sure how to get
customers.
Dear Joe:
I recently took my "hobby" and went "professional"
as a home interior decorator. I don't have much formal training, but people
tell me I am quite good at it. Now, how do I get customers? I'm really scared
I am going to fail. Help!
Joe's Answer: Big question! I say practice all
the guerrilla marketing you can. Do everything from blanket the world with
your business cards, to having a website, to issuing news releases, to telling
family, friends, and neighbors of your service, to being a little more outrageous
and holding contests.
Maybe consider issuing the "Top 10 Best Homes" in areas near you.
You'll become the expert on judging interiors, and your surveys will give
you reasons to get news. Think big and bold, and always believe in
yourself.
