Our expert wardrobe columnist Desiree Hackett Hickson answers the age-old question: should white shoes be worn after Labor Day?

Dear Dez,

I know that "Miss Manners" says that we shouldn't wear white shoes after Labor Day. Does that go for white pumps or all white shoes, in general? It seems to me that I notice some women wearing them all year long. Also, are there other rules regarding white shoes?
-Carol M., (Kearney, NE)

Dear Carol,

The first rule, regarding white shoes is pretty much in regard to pumps. There are very fashionable cold weather shoes that can be worn at this time of year, namely, boots. But, I personally prefer an off-white or beige for snowy weather. The color is much warmer looking and people with not get your feet confused with nearby snowdrifts. Being a Nebraska native, I know how much it snows, your feet should not be camouflaged by the environment that you live in. My advice: Save the white shoes for Spring and Summer. They go best with the pastels and soft prints that are popular during that time of year.

The other rule (and I feel most important rule) is that your panty hose should not be darker than your white shoes--no matter what time of year you choose to wear them. Wear natural tones like tan or coffee (depending on skin color) or white. Fashion NO-NO: Never wear black or colored hose with white shoes! It looks awkward and draws too much attention to your feet.

If it's important for you to make a fashion statement, don't let it be..."Help! I have no fashion sense!"
